Eoin (Шаблон:IPA-ga) is a masculine Irish-language given name. The Scottish Gaelic equivalent is Шаблон:Lang (Шаблон:IPA-gd) and both are closely related to the Welsh Шаблон:Lang. It is also cognate with the Irish Шаблон:Lang and English John. In the Irish language, it is the name used for all Biblical figures known as John in English, including John the Baptist and John the Apostle.

Шаблон:Lang/Шаблон:Lang are different names from Шаблон:Lang/Шаблон:Lang. The Old Irish name Eógan is generally considered to a derivation of the Greek and Latin name Шаблон:Lang, meaning "noble born".[1][2][3]

Cormic gives this origin for Eogan (one MS, Eogen); and Zimmer considers Owen to be borrowed from Latin Шаблон:Lang, as noted by MacBain, p. 400. The mediaeval Latinization of Owen as Шаблон:Lang led to a belief that the etymology was the Welsh and Breton Шаблон:Lang, "lamb". With much stronger reason it was at one time considered that the name represented Irish Шаблон:Lang = Gael. Шаблон:Lang [f. Old Irish Шаблон:Lang Welsh Шаблон:Lang, young], ‘youth’. Surnames of the United Kingdom cites Tomás Ua Concheanainn, Шаблон:Lang (p. 126), that "Шаблон:Lang is a diminutive of Шаблон:Lang, = Owain, Eugene"
