At the 2006 National Census, its population was 1,905 in 528 households, when it was in the former Khomam District of Rasht County.[2] The following census in 2011 counted 1,505 people in 491 households.[3] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 1,451 people in 502 households.[4]

In August 2019, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Khomam County and divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with Khomam as its capital and only city.[5] In March 2023, the village of Bala Mahalleh-ye Chukam in Chukam District was elevated to the status of a city as Chukam.[6]
