Eucalyptus xerothermica is a species of mallee or a tree that is endemic to northern Western Australia. It has rough, fibrous or flaky bark on the trunk and branches, lance-shaped to curved adult leaves, flower buds in groups of three or seven, creamy white flowers and conical to barrel-shaped fruit.

Description

Eucalyptus xerothermica is a tree or a mallee that typically grows to a height of Шаблон:Cvt, sometimes Шаблон:Cvt, and forms a lignotuber. Young plants and coppice regrowth have bluish to greyish green leaves that are Шаблон:Cvt long and Шаблон:Cvt wide and petiolate. Adult leaves are the same shade of green on both sides, lance-shaped to curved, Шаблон:Cvt long and Шаблон:Cvt wide, tapering to a petiole Шаблон:Cvt long. The flower buds are mostly arranged on the ends of branchlets in groups of three or seven on a branching peduncle Шаблон:Cvt long, the individual buds sessile or on pedicels up to Шаблон:Cvt long. Mature buds are oval, Шаблон:Cvt long and Шаблон:Cvt wide with a conical to rounded operculum. The flowers are creamy white and the fruit is a woody, conical to barrel-shaped capsule Шаблон:Cvt long and Шаблон:Cvt wide with the valves at rim level.[1][2][3]

Taxonomy and naming

Eucalyptus xerothermica was first formally described in 2000 by Lawrie Johnson and Ken Hill in the journal Telopea from specimens collected near the Fortescue River in 1983.[3][4] The specific epithet (xerothermica is from ancient Greek words meaning "dry" and "hot", referring to the climate where this species grows.[3]

Distribution and habitat

This eucalypt is found on floodplains and channel banks in the Pilbara, North West Cape and nearby islands where it grows in low, open savanna.[3]

Conservation status

This species is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[1]
