Fatma Bucak (born 1984) is an artist and photographer who lives and works in London and Istanbul.[1]

Biography

She was born in Iskenderun, Turkey, to a Kurdish family.[2] She works in a variety of media, including photography, performance, sound, and video installation, and focuses on themes of political identity, historical memory, and gender.[3][4][5] In 2019, she was named one of the Royal Photographic Society's ‘Hundred Heroines’, recognizing the achievements of women in photography.[6]

Bucak has exhibited at Venice Biennale, the Jewish Museum New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto.[7][8][9] Her work is held in the permanent collections of Fondazione Mario Merz, Arter, MAMbo, the Civic Gallery of Modena, and the Unicredit Art Collection.[10][7][11][12] In 2024, she was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome.[13] Bucak has also been artist-in-resident at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, and at ISCP in Brooklyn, New York.[14][15] Bucak directed the 2011 documentary film Almost Married, which premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam.[16]

Bucak won the illy Present Future Award at Artissima 2013,[33] and the Tosseti Value Prize for Photography in 2021.[34][35]
