Overview
The origins of Shrine date back over 1,800 years[1] and it is linked to Empress Jingū.[3]
There are 22 Watatsumi shrines in the region that claim to have been founded by her after her campaign including Шаблон:Ill.[4]Шаблон:Rp
The shrine is locally known as "Ofurosan".[1]
Furogu Shrine's Reitaisai happens in early February.[5][2] It is a major festival in the Chikugo region. It is one of three big festivals, with the others at Kora Shrine and Suitengu Shrine in Kurume. The festival is also known as "Ofurosan." It draws over 150,000 visitors. The festival is known for its exciting events.[5] During the festival people carry matsuri floats and chant.[2] The shioi-mairi and goshinko processions are highlights. Another attraction is the yabusame, which is horseback archery. This event is very popular. Around 300 stalls are set up near the shrine. They sell festival food. This includes dried persimmons and other items.[5]
Ths shrine has a massive Shinboku Camphor tree on its premises[1][2][6] The tree itself is 1800 years old[6][2]
The current main shrine was rebuilt by Kamakura no Yoritomo, the lord of Yanagawa Castle during the Sengoku period, and the main shrine and stone five-story pagoda have been designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government. Шаблон:Citation needed
It has a seated wooden figure of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy[6] and a dramatic standing statue of the sea god.[2]
The current shrine was built in 1560.[6]
