Govindbhai Laljibhai Dholakia is an Indian businessman who will serve as member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat from 2024 onwards, representing Bharatiya Janata Party.[1][2]

Early life

Dholakia was born at Dudhala, Lathi in Amreli district, Gujarat to a farmer's family. He was known in local as kaka (lit. uncle).[3] Dholakia moved in 1964 to Surat to support his family.[4]The turning point in his career occurred in 1977 when he, along with his business partners, initiated import-export operations, forming the partnership firm Shree Ramkrishna Exports Pvt. Ltd. (SRK). Over the years, the company expanded significantly, becoming a leading diamond exporter with over 5000 employees by 2014. [5]

Career

Dholakia founded Shree Ramkrishna Exports Private Limited, a prominent diamond export enterprise in Surat.[6] He is recognized for his philanthropic endeavors, which encompass the operation of the 'non-profit' organization, 'Shree Ramkrishna Welfare Trust'. Established in 1988, the trust focuses primarily on initiatives within the healthcare sector.[7]

In 2021, he donated Rs 11 crore for the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir.[8]

In 2022, Dholakia spearheaded the full solarization of his native place Dudhala. This effort led to the implementation of a 450 kW solar rooftop project, now supplying power to around 350 households and public areas within the village. The initiative has positively influenced the lives of over 2000 individuals. Now, Dudhala is a notable example for many Indian villages aspiring to adopt sustainable energy solutions.[9][10]

Awards & Recognition

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Green Building movement, he received the Leadership Award from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2017. [11]

Biography

Arun Tiwari and educationist Kamlesh Yagnik written a biography of Dholakia Diamonds Are Forever, So Are Morals, about his journey as merchant in 2022.[12][13] The book was also released in Gujarati in 2023.
