The Gretchen frisur (Шаблон:Lang-de) is a women's hairstyle that was once popular with German women. It consists of the hair braided and piled atop the head.[1][2] In the English language, this hairstyle might be called a crown braid or a halo braid.[3][4]

Etymology

The style ("Gretchen hair") is named for Gretchen, Faust's love interest from the writing of Goethe.[5]
