Origins

Hafize Sultan was born in 1502 in Trebizond, on the Black Sea, by then Şehzade Selim, son of Bayezid II, and Hafsa Hatun,

She was married in 1509 to Bostancıbaşı Iskender Pasha.[1] He was Sultan Bayezid II's loyal servant. He later became the commander of the Ottoman fleet during Bayezid's reign. In a crucial event in 1512, while in this role, Iskender provided substantial assistance to Selim by implementing a blockade on the Bosphorus. This action effectively prevented Selim's chief rival, Prince Ahmed, from crossing from Üsküdar to Istanbul.[2] The two together had three sons: Mehmedşah, Osmanşah and Suleiman; and a daughter Nefise.[1] [2]

When Sultan Selim wanted to attack Shah Ismail for the second time after the Battle of Chaldiran, he stayed temporarily in Amasya. However, the janissaries, who did not want another Iranian campaign, rebelled at the provocations of some state officials. Selim wanted to find out who provoked the janissaries, and opened a detailed investigation. As a result of the investigation, it was discovered that one of the instigators was Iskender Pasha, who was immediately executed by the Sultan in 1515.Шаблон:Sfn

Hafize later remarried Çoban Mustafa Pasha.Шаблон:Sfn Mustafa Pasha held a governor position of Skopje for long years, while he was married to Bayezid II's daughter Hümaşah Sultan. His swift rise saw promotions to governor-generalships, first in Anatolia in 1516 and then immediately in Rumelia in 1517. Mustafa's political acumen and loyalty likely caught Selim's attention, leading to the honor of remarrying Hafsa in 1517.[2]

Death

Hafize Sultan died on July 10, 1538 and was buried in the courtyard of Yavuz Selim Mosque in Istanbul. After her death, her son Kara Osman commissioned a mosque and a school in her name in Aksaray.[1]
