Isaac Doukas Vatatzes (Шаблон:Lang-gr) was the brother of the Nicaean emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes (Шаблон:Reign).

His exact origin is obscure: probably born Шаблон:Circa, he was the oldest of three brothers, alongside John III (the youngest) and an anonymous middle brother.Шаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn Their parents are unknown, but are considered by modern scholars likely to have been the general Basil Vatatzes and his unknown wife, who was a cousin to the Byzantine emperors Isaac II Angelos and Alexios III Angelos.Шаблон:SfnШаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn Like his brother John III,Шаблон:Sfn Isaac appears to have dropped the surname "Vatatzes" and was known only as "Isaac Doukas".Шаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn

Very little is known about his life. He held the rank of sebastokrator in 1253,Шаблон:Sfn and in 1261, he was present at the signing of the Treaty of Nymphaeum with the Republic of Genoa, holding the rank of pansebastos sebastos and the position of parakoimomenos of the great seal (sphendone).Шаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn He was then sent on an embassy to Genoa to ratify the treaty, along with Theodore Krivitziotes and Leo, archdeacon of the Hagia Sophia.Шаблон:Sfn Isaac died during the negotiations, and was buried in the Genoa Cathedral.Шаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn

Family
