Член Британской академии. Главный редактор и один из авторов «Энциклопедии ислама», редактор-консультант и один из авторов энциклопедии «Ираника», один из авторов «Британники» и «Американы»[1].

Учился в Оксфордском и Эдинбургском университетах. Преподавал в Сент-Эндрюсском университете, Манчестере и Принстоне[1].

Автор более ста публикаций в журналах и сборниках, монографий. Сотрудничал с энциклопедиями «Американа», «Британника», «Ираника» (редактор-консультант) и «Энциклопедией ислама» (главный редактор)[1].
