Биография

Родился 30 марта 1923 года в Сринагаре.

Окончил Королевский колледж Кембриджского университетаШаблон:Sfn.

В 1948–1954 годах — преподаватель (Шаблон:Lang-en), в 1958——1963 годах — доцент (Шаблон:Lang-en), 1963–1986 годах — профессор, с 1986 года — профессор-эмерит африканской истории в Школе востоковедения и африканистики Лондонского университета. Являлся приглашённым профессором Брюссельского университета (1961), Северо-Западного университета (1962) и Гарвардского университета (1967).

В 1960–19—73 годах — ответственный редактор научного журнала Шаблон:Нп3, который основал вместе с Джоном Фейджем. Главный редактор (совместно с Фейджем) восьмитомной Шаблон:Нп3, вышедшей в 1975–1986 годах.

Он много путешествовал по Африке в 1949–1950 и 1957–1958 годах и с тех пор посещал континент почти каждый год. В 1953, 1957 и 1961 годах организовал международные конференции по истории и археологии Африки, которые во многом способствовали превращению африканистики в академическую дисциплину.

В 1963 году провёл опрос 250 работающих учёных-африканистов Великобритании и основал Шаблон:Нп3 (ASAUK), став в 1966–1967 годах её четвёртым президентом. В 1973–1993 годах также являлся президентом Шаблон:Нп3.
